Robotic Spiders Being Developed for Warfare: Report - [ 3:12 p.m. PST, 04 May 2008 ]
British defense giant BAE Systems is developing small insect-looking devices for warfare that can be sent into hostile areas and transmit data back to soldiers.

The devices include some that look like spiders filled with sensors capable of sending back images and data to troops searching for enemy combatants hidden behind rubble, in dark rooms and other buildings.

Prototypes could be on the front line by the end of the year, London's Daily Mail newspaper reported.

Soldiers will carry the robots into combat and use a small tracked vehicle to transport them closer to their targets. From there they would swarm into buildings and send back data to soldiers' wrist-mounted computers, warning of potential threats.
