The Chinese government said Tuesday as many as 40,000 people were killed in the Sichuan province, the hardest-hit area of the country by last week's massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake.
The government, meanwhile, is struggling to find housing for up to 5 million survivors who were left homeless by the quake.
The government earlier said the confirmed death toll overall was 34,074. Another 32,361 people remained missing across the quake zone, said the State Council, China's Cabinet.
