Lebanon's warring factions reached a breakthrough agreement Wednesday that ends the 18-month political stalemate but also gives militant group Hezbollah and its allies veto power over government decisions.
The deal was praised by Syria and Iran, both nations which back Hezbollah. But the deal will surely raise questions in the West, which regards the group as a terrorist organization because of its past actions, about its newfound power.
Saad Hariri, leader of Lebanon's West-backed government, signaled that he had largely caved in to the militant group's demands. But he said his actions were due in large part to a huge spike in violence since the stalemate began.
"I know that the wounds are deep and my injury is deep, but we only have each other to build Lebanon," he said after the announcement of the deal.
