In response to soaring fuel costs, American Airlines will cut domestic flights and staff, and will begin charging $15 for the first checked bag, officials said Wednesday.
The airline said it would reduce domestic flights 11 to 12 percent in the fourth quarter, after the busy summer flying season. That is more than double the airline's initial plan earlier this year to cut flights by 4.6 percent.
The nation's largest carrier said the fee for the first checked bag would begin June 15. Airline officials also said other fees - such as for checking oversized bags and reservations - would be increased as well.
Those fees will mostly range from $5 to $50 per service, the airline said.
